The man

Nigel Benn, The Dark Destroyer, is one of the most celebrated British boxers of his era. A two-weight world champion, his career was defined by ferocious power-punching and a willingness to fight anyone.

The Tucker connection

Tony Tucker provided security for Benn through the early-to-mid 1990s, and the two became close friends. Rise of the Footsoldier 4: Marbella hangs much of its emotional weight on this friendship, using Tony’s desperation to get back to the UK in time for Benn’s 25 February 1995 title fight against Gerald McClellan as its driving plot tension.

The fight

Benn vs McClellan at the London Arena ended in tragedy. McClellan was knocked out, collapsed shortly after, and suffered catastrophic brain injuries that left him blind and partially paralysed. The fight is part of British boxing history and runs through Marbella as a dark counterpoint to the criminal action.

On screen

Nigel’s son Conor Benn, a boxer himself, plays his father in both Rise of the Footsoldier 4: Marbella and Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins.
