Stephen McCole

Stephen McCole is a Scottish actor whose career spans film, television, and comedy. He is best known for his lead role in the black comedy series High Times and for his appearance in the American comedy Rushmore.

Early Career and Breakthrough

McCole grew up in Glasgow’s Castlemilk area, an upbringing he has credited with informing the authenticity of his performances. He made his mark early with roles in The Acid House (1998) and the American comedy Rushmore (1998), in which he played Magnus Buchan. He also appeared in The Young Person’s Guide to Becoming a Rock Star (1998) and Postmortem (1998), establishing himself as a versatile presence across both British and international productions.

Television and BAFTA Recognition

McCole took on the lead role of Rab in the black comedy series High Times, portraying an unemployed stoner living with his family in a Glasgow high-rise. The series earned the 2004 BAFTA Scotland Best Drama Award, with McCole’s performance at its centre. He has also featured in the long-running BBC Scotland soap opera River City, as well as major productions including Band of Brothers, Outlander, Merlin, Shetland, and Brassic.

Film Work

McCole has built an impressive film résumé. He appeared in The Magdalene Sisters (2002), Last Orders (2001), Neds (2010), A Lonely Place to Die (2011), The Legend of Barney Thomson (2015), and the historical epic Outlaw King (2018), in which he played Seamus Barber. Other credits include Perfect Sense (2011), Stone of Destiny (2008), and Malevolent (2018).

Behind the Camera

In 2005, McCole stepped behind the camera to direct the comedy short Electric Blues, written by his older brother Paul McCole, demonstrating a creative range that extends beyond performance.
