The man
Bill Gardner is one of the most celebrated and feared faces in the history of English football hooliganism. He came up through the Mile End Boys, which would merge with other West Ham groups in 1977 to form the Inter City Firm.
His famous line, allegedly delivered to rival mobs before a brawl, was “Good afternoon gentlemen. The name’s Bill Gardner.” — which later became the title of his own memoir (co-authored with Cass Pennant in 2006).
Gardner appears on the front cover of the original print of Cass Pennant’s seminal Congratulations You Have Just Met the ICF. He never appears as a character in the Rise of the Footsoldier franchise but is a foundational figure in the wider story of the ICF, of which Carlton Leach was a member.
